Yes, it's sad. Mastodon will remain the media's darling as they remain predominantly positioned towards one spectrum of the political isle. On Mastodon, I regularly see more, far leftist Ideology and propaganda than I even ever had on Twitter. Incredible echo chambers with the Fediverse. And I consider myself a centrist. So, to experience what I'd consider "extreme" forms of Liberalism has been eye-opening. In contrast, Nostr is a balance of mostly centrist, AnCaps and right wing. Little to no leftists and Marxists/Leninists here. Mix in the love of Bitcoin and it's easy to see why one side would be more critical and dismissive of Nostr than that of Mastodon as it already supports their subscribed world view.
I agree about the protocols and you've misunderstood what I wrote. The political part matters to the media. That's why Nostr has gotten little attention. The MSM editorial staff who beat the drum on global warming aren't too privvy on covering "Crypto," especially Bitcoin, since they think it's detrimental to the environment. That's why they're always the first to applaud when crypto market tanks. Conversely, the exodus of the Left from Twitter and made most mainstream and public Mastodon servers become an echo chamber, as mentioned. Sure there are right wing servers, but few and far between. The majority of Mastodon (especially those advertised in their official site) are quite liberal (just read the server rules). Since this ideology matches that of the MSM, it makes sense why they got adoring coverage.
