Politicians will say whatever makes them popular. So trusting them to make laws or having them decide on policies is just stupid. Let's stop it. This is not my opinion. This is what we can conclude from empirical evidence.

It’s a “representative democracy” and the people we elect to “represent” us lie about their very intentions and overplay their ability to even do those things, ~100% of the time
