Looks like "Simplified Chinese" is the communist version of "Traditional Chinese" and that Taiwan and Hong Kong are the bastions of traditionalism in these matters.
Was I the only person that didn't know that the official name of Taiwan is "Republic of China" because apparently their government claims to be the legitimate government of the entire China since when the communists took power?

Yes. This is true. ROC claims the mainland, CCP claims ROC. Before it was Capitalist/Nationalist vs Communist, now is more State Authoritarian vs Corporate Authoritarian. And while HK sans TW maintain the usage of “traditional characters” these still exist in Mainland China - but the idea that perhaps these were a bit over-engineered and simplification could reap significant benefits of general ease and improved madd literacy, was not - in my opinion - entirely unfounded.
