Not following the “nvk” until something is confirmed. If the old npub got “deleted” then why is it still there and I can view the posts?
056d6 - 2y
You can’t actually delete an account. This is just for Damus to pass App Store requirements. He’s trying to revert the deletion rn
Avi Burra @AviBurra - 2y
Good point. I’ll sit it out as well
Right but it does make the account inaccessible to the user. So is this what the “deleted account” is supposed to look like afterwards? #[3]

How can an account be "deleted"? It should work just like a Bitcoin public address, right? You just need the private keys.

I don’t believe Damus actually sends out delete events for every note, since it might not be aware of all your notes. It looks like it only sends out a profile metadata event. Is this correct #[2]

Highly sus
The npub in that well known still takes me to the old profile though
32a29 - 2y
Please let me know what is nvk?
That’s a good start but someone as connected as he is within bitcoin circles needs to make it crystal clear in a very public and verifiable fashion that he has a new npub.
alanajoy @alanajoy - 2y
I agree that’s the move, prob trying to figure out wtf right now
Hmm you’re right. I might jumped the gun on that. He’s responding from his old profile and telegram though. Waiting for confirmation is the right move

👋
Did he say in telegram that was his new npub? I don’t think I’m in any groups with him there.

If he lost the keys, he can't publish delete events. The old NVK posts will be there forever.
He’s still replying to people from that account, presumably from a different client.

Just in case you need, here is my confirmation of the npub remaining the same. https://twitter.com/nvk/status/1631351106038120448 ## What happened? @#[0] The original DERP; I accidentally took the Damus "Delete Account" as sign out (ie Delete Private Key). Which I do have a backup so was not very concerned and did the deed. (IIRC that's where the sign-out button use to be) Damus to comply with Apple Store has to have a "delete account" method. So how does Damus do it? AFAIK, it authors an empty (zeroing) of the Kind0 (profile data), clients rendered it as "nobody" and adds a "deleted account" flag. This means that until this is cleared from all relays and cache you can't login into the Damus app. But this zeroing out of the meta data does seem to cause relays and other clients confused. The contact list (follow/followers) seems to also have been zeroed in some relays. - The followers seem to be all gone, which is not a big deal ppl who want just go and refollow me. - For the following list, I just need to go look at an old contact list event and manually refollow ppl. Because this is not documented as a NIP it's hard to know which relays or clients are honouring the Flag. I think once the Kind0 of the profile is fully propagated the Damus should let me login again. Maybe there is a bug or IP block on Damus too, can't login with other "non-deleted" keys even after re-installing the app (TestFlight version) ...and then Client/Relays confusion should end. Going to take a walk... BRB

Thanks for testing out the damus account deletion process for everyone! 💜

how the heck could followers be gone? maybe in damus, but for sure i saw all your posts, including old ones
Lauren of Light ☀️ @lauren - 2y
Are you running your own relay? Would that have made a difference in your data?
Michael Matulef @Michael Matulef - 2y
Does this mean that you're going to delete #[3] now? 🤣
06b78 - 2y
Bummer. Shows how hard it is to manage private keys.
#[1] pushed a updated kind0 to as far as I could, I think most relays have seen it. Still can't login. Odd enough can't login even from unrelated pk. Some server cashing IPs or device ID? (using latest from TestFlight)

I’ve heard people report the same thing and it makes no sense to me… will debug
Merci.

May at least want a few more confirmations when pressing that button?
7560e - 2y
Are you this sure???
ecda3 - 2y
And then, “are you sure you’re this sure?”
c02be - 2y
And push a Pop up warning that says “Deleted account is not recoverable”
eric @eric - 2y
People normally complain how hard it is to delete their social media account. On nostr it’s the opposite.

Profile > Settings > Delete account > all caps > Type DELETE > delete Not something that can be done accidentally
Nope no mention about the new npub
He posted this a little bit ago here #[4]
So the other account wasn’t him?
I believe it was him but it seems like he never advertised it publicly as a new account because he’s trying to continue using this one if possible.
To be fair, It does make you type "DELETE". Maybe extra confirm with a full red screen LOL. But I'm not sure I like the idea of an app authoring a event in my name like that, specially not being a NIP or documented. I think a NIP to handle "account self deletion" to comply with GDPR might be worth doing, if anything because it could describe how to un-delete the account. All these will be very client/relay specific on how it gets enforced, so would be nice to have a way to unlock yourself out of this hole.
Update. Login working again.
Wait…you hit delete and typed DELETE and it was still an accident? brb sending you all my bitcoin for safekeeping
