Unpopular opinion: the nostr apps that become sustainable, will likely be funded with boring old subscriptions that have nothing to do with bitcoin.

why? don’t you believe we can do more exciting things and people like it?
Because by making it bitcoin only we narrow our customer base - and we don’t even have working bitcoin subscriptions yet. Maybe they become a thing, and then I’ll change my mind. But I have a feeling a fiat client will beat us to it.
Right now I could pay a subscription or 2 on autopilot to support my favorite clients, but I can’t even do that. I can zap, or “subscribe “ and be reminded to renew subscription but I’d just forget.

You can do subscriptions on lightning. We've implemented them for nostr:npub1mutnyacc9uc4t5mmxvpprwsauj5p2qxq95v4a9j0jxl8wnkfvuyque23vg

Noooooooo nostr:npub1cmmswlckn82se7f2jeftl6ll4szlc6zzh8hrjyyfm9vm3t2afr7svqlr6f made a lovely pay tool dingy just for this , easy subs in sats, turn the rest = #bitcoin win ⚡️
How does it work?
Counter Narrative @wolfbearclaw - 1y
Right now the few ways I see that working intuitively is either with some subscription management in the form of nwc and allowing control of funds to be drawn or the “fountain” method of adding sats to a custodial balance that gets drawn against. Also agree that Bitcoiners is a narrow market of people and despite zaps, are less willing to part with their money vs others.
I could see some light at the end of the tunnel with well-functioning subscriptions, but even then it’s an uphill battle.
we can do that. In the subscription case for example I think this will be handled by wallets. Not the recipient manages the subscription and pulls money (what happens with card payments) but the sender’s wallet manages the subscription and auto pushes money. These are things we plan with Alby. zapplanner is for example an early experiment of that. but I also believe in other business models that become possible because we can automate p2p payments.
Would be interesting to see a working example of pre-approved pushed by wallet payment. Curious to hear what other business models you have in mind. I’ve been doubting v4v for a while, and think you have to have a recurring element for things to be sustainable but would love to be proven wrong.
Send an invoice to the user over nwc every month
That’s not automated though? Or does it come out automatically? If you have to approve every time, I’m not sure that will work. Id probably forget to check what’s due.
It's all automated. In mutiny you can decide if you want it to auto approve or not.
Oh interesting 🧐 This should be marketed more 😂
Yeah we're planning to

Lightning-based subscriptions can work more efficiently than our traditional system. Just like one-click Zap, you should be able to create subscriptions in one click using Nostr wallet connect. But still Bitcoin is very neche for most of the people. So I get your point.

Interesting point. However, boring old subscriptions aren’t going to cut it with the core faithful if they only use kyc credit card rails and no bitcoin payment option.
