running a lightning node is one of the most fun things you can do in bitcoin. figuring out where to open channels and monitor routing is a wonderful hobby.
no grow it alongside your cold storage stack . make sure your channels are at least 5mil sats

how do you recommend monitoring routing?
a couple options: lnd-terminal web, zeus mobile, and thunderhub
the bigger the channel the better (less need for rebalancing and can route big and small amounts so more versatile) ideally a really really big channel. i like mine 0.25 btc or larger
just start on voltage.cloud they make running it painless
