Adding Value through Culture A business's success is inextricably linked to the value it provides to its shareholders and employees. I include employees here because their importance is often overlooked, or downplayed in comparison to shareholders, in the quest for profits and glory. By focusing on the employees and ensuring their work experience is of the highest caliber, we raise the quality of work produced by the company. This seems obvious, but in an era of work from home and digital communities, where most of us find our communities in the digital space, it is important not to forget the fact that the people and culture 'on the ground' matter. For a manufacturing company, where the final product is a tangible good that exists in the customer's home, one must focus and attend to the culture with great care. After all, manufacturing is by nature location dependent - one must go to where the machines are. Neglecting the physical location where those machines are and where the work is completed will only negatively affect the end product and overall value provided to the customer. The broken windows theory suggests that visible signs of disorder lead to more serious crimes. This concept can be adapted to business contexts. For example, in a custom cabinet manufacturing company, this idea manifests as the 'dusty machine theory.' While crimes may not be the end result, an ever worsening product might be. Dirty machines, unkempt spaces, and dangerous hazards not only reduce morale but also lead to negative outcomes. Thus, in terms of culture, it cannot be ignored or evaded; instead, it must be carefully nurtured to add value. #business #businessthoughts #manufacturing #addingvalue #culture #thoughts
