this is the future they want for us. the uk has passed the online safety bill, undermining privacy, security, and freedom FOR ALL INTERNET USERS. this bill allows the government to force companies to backdoor e2e encryption. private conversations are a basic human right. "if the regulators claim their right to require the creation of dangerous backdoors in encrypted services, we expect encrypted messaging services to keep their promises and withdraw from the U.K. if that nation’s government compromises their ability to protect other users." https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2023/09/today-uk-parliament-undermined-privacy-security-and-freedom-all-internet-users

Can the UK really implement this though? What's stopping them running a VPN or Tor and bypass the UKs restrictions? And for encrypted message apps being withdrawn from UKs playstore, can't they just download an APK for elsewhere? Obviously iPhone users got no chance..
yes. to the tech literate there are ways of bypassing internet restrictions. however, this bill will create new criminal offenses incl. "false communication offense". who decides what's "false"? "if the amendment proposed by Champion is passed, it could lead to restrictions on VPN usage in the UK. This could have serious implications for internet users who rely on VPNs to protect their privacy and bypass censorship" https://www.vpnhound.com/guides/online-safety-bill-vpns/ this bill is a threat to basic human rights it's good to know #signal is ready to walk if it happens "Signal, an encrypted messaging service with roughly 40 million users, has said it will shut down UK operations if the bill undermines end-to-end encryption." https://www.cyberghostvpn.com/en_US/privacyhub/online-safety-bill-internet-privacy/
