This is an important idea from #[0]​ and there’s a lot to unpack here #[1] Existing apps/super-apps are run by full stack orgs that have many layers of services bundled together. We often discuss the UI and the database layers, but these orgs have also have policy, customer service, algorithmic discovery, advertising sales and operations, eng infrastructure, accounting/finance, HR teams, etc. The beauty/magic of nostr is not just that it separates UI from datastore. Those are obviously important. But in separating those the full-stack orgs also get unbundled. The unbundling allows for OSS or layer-specific companies to be built providing solutions which fill consumer/business needs better than any single centralized provider has organizational bandwidth to handle. Huge net benefit accrues to the consumer who has the freedom to choose which tools serve their needs best!

I think we’re early days so not sure we just pick from what’s on the menu. Maybe certain clients help showcase/contain/simplify the UX of collections of microapps. Maybe a new open-source “OS-like-layer” emerges that doesn’t feel like a Twitter clone, but feels like something else?

I think we need to do a bunch more work on integration with micro apps. For example, if the client i'm using doesn't support longer form markdown content, how do i know that the people i'm following post that. A kind of, 'x person is posting y type events, here are some apps you can use to see them' or something like that. The primary social clients need to help discovery of the micro apps...

Nostr: An Open Super App The super app is something like WeChat, a single app where you do everything, book a car service, talk to your friends, make purchases online or in person. It's a monolithic do everything app and it's very popular, especially in China. Silicon Valley tends to make apps that are nothing like the super app. It's because western tech companies don't work anything like Chinese internet companies. Western tech tends to rely on a huge base of open source software but then create these vertically integrated silos of apps that do one thing well with elegant design and not many options. When an app does try to do lots of things we hate it, just look at MS Word. The vertical integration is narrow. The Chinese super app does everything broadly, but it's not so pretty. SV tends to stagnate, companies are afraid to compete with themselves so they get stuck at a local maximum. Our culture of product development find something that works, and sticks with it. That's why in the west, big companies buy the upstarts. If you're an ambitious entrepreneur, you quit and create a new startup. Most likely you'll fail, but you might do well enough that a big company will you buy you out, or you'll do so well you replace the incumbents. The last western super app was AOL. And we celebrated its death. Since then it's just been a dream. It was Elon Musk's goal when he bought twitter, it was the story that SBF sold to investors as he pumped up FTX. An app to rule them all. We don't make a super app because our culture, politics, and economic system don't work like that. We hated being stuck on AOL. Silicon Valley's real super app is the web itself, the browser, linux, smart phones, etc... They're more open, less controlled, more competitive. Our legal system punishes companies that become dominate to eliminate monopolies. Out business culture causes big tech companies to be safe and consistent. Google had the lead in AI yet it was OpenAI that launched ChatGPT in a chaotic barely coordinated 6 week sprint. Even after AOL, there was a time when silicon valley was moving towards its model of a more open super app. Facebook launched their platform, twitter's api enabled a tremendous app ecosystem. But both companies chose to lock things down. They did it because their only economic model was based on advertising and required their control. The web was slowly enclosed from an open chaotic ecosystem to a platform which monitors users behavior and captured their attention to sell to advertisers. I think open social protocols we're seeing emerge today, and in particular nostr, could be our super app. Instead a single app that does everything. It's a common social protocol where many apps can be created and run. We've created a system that reflects a set of values around autonomy, openness, decentralization, permissionless participation, privacy, encryption, and yes cryptocurrencies. Without the financial part, we can't make the ecosystem thrive. We can make a super app, but not one, rather a family of apps, a style of apps that let there be a choices on a common platform. Smart clients, dumb relays, and just enough cryptography to keep it all functioning. When we build this new open super app protocol, we'll need to create all the things that existed on the centralized social media apps, but also the giant closed super apps. The old model was vertically integrated. Lots of services and businesses were needed to keep it running but they were all controlled by a single company, hidden off from the public. The advertising marketplace, the content moderation, the CDN for fast media delivery, the transcoders for making images and video the right size, the algorithms for deciding what to show you or who you should connect with, the bug tracking, customer support, business development team, legal, compliance, public relations. 
We don't like how the vertically integrated ecosystem worked, it didn't provide us agency and autonomy. But most importantly, we didn't have the space to innovate and create. In this new open system, we still need all those services provided by the big companies is needed somehow. We need to meet those same needs, but in new ways. Users see the frontend of an app, the UX, their experience as a user. But there is so much more, middleware, backend, business operations. All of that will need to be created in a new open ecosystem. To take one example, moderation, so we don't have to see a constant flow of ISIS beheading videos, some that we can handle with algorithms, but that's also how big social does it today. Even with the best AI minds in the world, a lot slips through. People need to be able to make judgements, and figure out edge cases. I don't like the choices that Facebook, TIkTok, or Elon's Twitter makes, but it doesn't mean we won't need to make those choices. Now we can make it a service where we pay people who do that social labor. And we can choose who we want to do it, making sure their values are alined. We can use a stead stream of payments to all of these services. Nostr can be the protocol upon which we build an open super app ecosystem which contains multitudes.

I like habla.news and the other apps using nip-23 & kind:30023. What I’m thinking though is if you start posting that then you’ll lose most readers who only display the unformatted kind:3 events. I think one solution would be to post a linked kind:3 post with a short summary and linking to the longer form one in a couple of ways. One with the hash reference, one with an http:// link in the body to a nostr viewer. Sometimes you don’t want the long form post to be in people’s feeds, but often you do. We’re going to be exploring options regarding this with nos.social but at this point it’s just ideas and speculation.

I tried to but I don’t know how to read Chinese so I’ve had to rely on people describing how it works. If I’m wrong then I’d love to be corrected. I find the cultural / linguistic gaps between digital communities to be big. In Latin America I find people and businesses use WhatApp for everything, and I’ve done tons of that, but I think Facebook is held back by several things from making it in to a proper super app.

I don't mind long format if the client allows to show it as a short snippet in the feed and extend if so desired. Going off the feed to read something long format is another hurdle where you will lose most of the people. Part of the super app experience should be the ability to stay where you are and not switch apps / sites 😁

So yeah, the U in BUGS is me. Just wanted to personally apologize for the error. It was a really stupid error and I several lessons about how to do this better in the future. For anyone who is curious, the specific bug is that I counted votes as "kind 7 events where any etag references this note" when it should have been "kind 7 events where *the last* etag references this note". The script I used to calculate the events is published here for auditing and in case anyone else wants to try a voting process like this in the future. github.com/mplorentz/nostr-voting-tools In a weird way though I think this is a great example of how transparency and open systems are superior. We decided to do our community vote in the open on Nostr which hadn't been done before. Because the data was public nobody had to take our word for it and it let to the correct outcome in the end. I will be much more careful next time sats are on the line, but I'm going to keep dogfooding and learning at the bleeding edge of what Nostr can do! Thank you for being gracious #[1].

I'm not sure about Martin's history. But I grew up near the Bill Monroe Bluegrass park (where Bill Monroe lived and worked with all of the original Blugrass players) and Martins were everywhere. My reference is to what happened when the President of Gibson Guitar Company donated to the Republican Party when Obama won the Presidency. The US Federal Government unleased regulators to attack Gibson. It reached the point in which the US government wad accusing Gibson of illegally using protected lumber from India while the Indian government was publicly and formally that Gibson was entirely legal in their purchase of that lumber. At several points, it looked like Gibson was going to be forced out of business and, at points, had to shut down US production. For a couple of years it looked very much like Gibson was going to be forced out of business.

Thank you for sharing this informative article, my friend. It is truly incredible to see how Bitcoin, through decentralization and its unyielding resistance to censorship, is able to restore freedoms and liberties once promised by the US Constitution, and deliver them to individuals across the globe. I think that it is clear that the traditional financial system, with its centralization and control, has failed to live up to the spirit of the Constitution, leaving many people without access to basic financial services and subjected to the whims of those in power. Bitcoin, on the other hand, empowers individuals to take back control of their own money and participate in a truly global, borderless economy. Yesterday I installed the Damus at Maldives man and it doesn't work completely (cannot edit profile, cannot add relay and etc...). Uninstalled and installed didn't help. Everything worked as if there was no Internet on the phone. Although if he specified my public key in the search, he found me and could read my posts. He couldn't update his profile, and if I tried to add relays from my profile to him from the relay tab, nothing just happened. Amethyst also works perfectly on my phone from the same network. I even connected it through my access point - Damus just behaved like a stupid, broken program. I still haven't figured out how I can help him.

NIP5 is a great solution to prevent being scammed by fake accounts. Especially if the only way to verify pubkeys is to find it on a centralized and competing app. I like that domains are being used as a tool for verification on bluesky too.

Yea NIP5 does not make sense for people that don’t own domains which is a large share of the public…whoever solves a decentralized identity protocol that anyone can use and does not involve scanning your eyeballs will have something big

All I know is that It was the best feeling in the world adding the nostr.report NIP05 to the entire #[6]​ team. I personally think that a lot individuals in the future will have their own domain, but even if not, what we really need is to understand someone’s reputation, not identification.

I just suspended my 15 years old twitter account. We cant rely on bird anymore (oh sorry dog) Also NIP isnt right, i myself created 20 account yesterday and verified it, later i realised ta useless cause i know nsec and i cant give it to others be it individual or orgs. Once i know nsec means its end game. Best is implementing protocol for public fig , orgs and known people in which they need to verify via number, email or other social medias. Its for them right. And no data storage for verification nor do anything else. Plebs are with or without verification or right tick

Since you mentioned nostr having alot of traction in China. Would you consider building in a non-negotiable in regards to plastic pollution- meaning that there has to be a clear move towards organic biodegradable solution in Asia specifically. If the tech community would take a stand in regards to this it would matter. microplastics that even have been found in the amniotic fluid.

It was always supposed to be just one of many methods, we're just missing the other methods. There is https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/blob/master/39.md too, which https://nostr.directory/ issues (right, nostr:npub1xhe9408d5hm3dpwax78sy9nuc5warycnvcy4r3qzv6jacwu26r6s5m56yf?) and clients could somehow implement support for querying and displaying. I don't know if there is any that does that. And also the petname/wot stuff that could be done with just NIP-02 but is underutilized too, which is ok since it's hard.
