Once I'm done with these book projects I'm embroiled in, I think I'm going to embark upon a rewrite of more-speech. Using swing was a huge mistake. I'll be looking at a different UI technology.
There's a nice clojure library that wraps it. I got seduced by that. In the end, however, the statefulness of the framework is too big a cost to pay.
