Well, we use theforest and thecitadel to form the content of a website, and it'd be a blank website for people who just stumbled onto it from a search engine or a hyperlink, if we required AUTH.
We only have AUTH on the mirrors, the git server relays (original and mirror), and on Realy.

you can require auth while not caring which tho, except for writing. auth-to-write but any-auth-to-read-and-don't-give-"-" events without membership. then you have a reason to nag them to subscribe too. this puts the control in the people who put the content up then.
also, this relates to the "don't give DMs to users not authed with a pubkey in the event" thing as well
But then they need to login to read.
