Even using GrapheneOS & a VPN, the battery consumption when travelling, despite lots of time spent in airplane mode & even leaving the phone off for hours at a time, appears to be far worse. The phone gets hot when I turn it on or connect to the cell network as though there is some sort of reporting happening in the background.

Large SimpleX groups killed my battery while I was traveling. I looked at the battery usage stats and saw about 40% from SimpleX. Left the big groups and it went to basically zero. I have a similar setup to yours.

Pixel 7 pro Haven't installed anything that I think would compromise security in any major way. Brave browser &/or Telegram are probably the worst things 🤔

I honestly can't say for sure. Just noticed on my recent trip to Canada. There have definitely been days where battery life is worse & the phone seems to work harder, but usually a reboot (sometimes to install an update or something) usually fixes it. This time I noticed my battery life was suffering even with very little use & I cut it off for a while, but on boot it seemed to be draining all the same. I wonder how much cell towers can request in terms of requiring a phone to work to maintain a connection as a means of active tracking. I have read (& observed) that iphones once disconnected from cellular networks appear to work harder (and have less battery life) when they are connected to anything because they are pinging everything & reporting more. I wonder if cell phones with inconsistent connections can trigger cellular networks to do more tracking, causing poorer battery life even with an otheriwse secure OS...?
