All I will say is that Returns is very basic and people just liked because they were starving for DK games. I can agree with Freeze being in top 3 though.

DK Freeze is a great game and even has a free roam coop mode but I'd put it in top 5 thought, for me it has the same bit problem Returns has: it doesn't fit that well with the OG 4 games and seems more like a spinoff. Now for last place in a Top 10 I believe Barrel Blast deserves more to be in there than Bananza. If that game had traditional controls and a world hub, it would be far better.
I'm not big on DK, I never finished many of the games, even though I did play them. But if it helps, I'm honestly tired of seeing remakes, gacha versions, re-imaginings, and re-releases being hailed as the second coming when the newer games can't even capture the charm of the originals, lol.
If you get a N64 just play DK64 and DKR along with the DKC triology, and you're good as you already played the best after Rare game. DK64 also made me enjoy casual playing Arcade DK.. but yeah kinda tired of seeing those second coming of games, for Crash was cool but after that.. downhill
