I think that boomers would likely the generation that coined the term. The Gen X were being born in the 80s, most still in elementary or middle school. How could they possibly be hacking on the internet in the 80s? Wouldn’t most Gen Xs get their hands on a computer by the 90s? 1337 was coined when BBS was a thing.
