I must confess to occasionally disingenuously arguing in a devil's advocate way simply for the sake of articulating an argument in public 🤭
also theres a counterspeech-type argument to be made in arenas where ideas are frequently repeated, but not clearly understood by the speakers (this includes myself). for those unaware "counterspeech" suggests the proper response to so-called "negative speech" is more dialogue, not less. the classic quote is Louis Brandeis, “If there be time to expose through discussion, the falsehoods and fallacies, to avert the evil by the processes of education, the remedy to be applied is more speech, not enforced silence.” therefore more dialogue, not less. refinement of ideas through conflict and discussion, not stifling in echo-chambers and refusing to engage with different opinions.
