A rather successful one: it's even still widely used in Ukraine, and was used at the beginning of the full scale invasion before they finally switched to Signal. The freedom of speech stance is just a way to get more users. Most likely Durov has pissed off Putin somehow and was likely to end up killed. So fleeing to France to face charges was his next best option. He's no hero. He built a dangerous service with atrocious privacy.
