A couple of thoughts from today's daily #Bible listening: https://pod.link/1104407866/episode/465f62823274084ee73583fe14e17c36 New Testament: Acts 4:1-6 – Peter and John Before the Council "And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees* came upon them, 2 greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3 And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 4 But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand. 5 On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, 6 with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family...." (* the Sadducees were are party of Jewish priests who did not believe in resurrection. That's why they were sad, u see. 😄) The early Christians had to be freaking out because this was the same group that had arrested #Jesus and then had Him executed just weeks earlier. Perhaps they feared now Peter and John were next. But as God would have it, they were released and lived to preach another day. Stephen, however, would be martyred soon thereafter and become the first Christian martyr, Acts 6-7. I wonder if any of the Christians at the time thought that he might be soon resurrected, like Jesus was? The fact that he wasn't shows the uniqueness of the death and resurrection of Jesus, who is the "firstborn from the dead" and the "first-fruits." Stephen's time will come, however, at the last day. Acts 4:34 (ESV): "There was not a needy person among them..." I think this is great, and how it should be in the church.
