Latest #proofofwork. Cedar shingle replacement on the gable end of our house. Cedar trees cut from our land last winter. Logs milled this spring. Shingles sawn last week. Installed over the past few days. What a dramatic transformation! Still some small details to finish up today, and then my back really needs a break. 😅 https://image.nostr.build/39d0039c5f8bea613ff93c9197ca0f139dc1baa3cfda2d59d4408042e885de4b.jpg https://image.nostr.build/2afea0820727a48c30f78838a8a5259a3886181224a04ad0429b34d01742daee.jpg https://image.nostr.build/30d5c60147b65c723ab25e5d499896414b360cb8acd23db487a1e47ac357fd96.jpg https://image.nostr.build/1af447ded5b5f2448612a4a2215f78fac5159ea21f90848588afb0b621065d3c.jpg https://image.nostr.build/3a6da07b07c203d25b83e882961090edafb30b8dbe5ca944e1e1e060f25a7640.jpg
some before / in-progress for comparison: The shingles I removed were the original roofing cover, installed in 1905. 😳 I can only hope my work lasts 1/2 that long. #lowtimepreference https://image.nostr.build/0951b17c9d4548842ce47f86bd9103e8754ff90cba6f326f22df54f396fbcbaf.jpg https://image.nostr.build/421406045e1cd521b648e5fd323956f2b4645baab0ce08d1eb95ca3b6e0e9d61.jpg https://image.nostr.build/75d2e3723d42c7c9117074475bdc416d3df51dc2e1318677f20da513a14726b2.jpg https://image.nostr.build/96bb5101b0790c53ecedb4c89f4e8ea5b417cad047b74b245496f5270fa535e1.jpg

Looks incredible!! Cedar is a great wood for outside siding — Well done 🧡
They are about 1/4 inch thick on the butt-end and taper to almost nothing. The technical measurement used for 16-inch shingles is 5/2" (5 butts together measures 2" thick)
I have treated them with Siloxane which makes the wood less prone to warping, cracking, and other water-related damage but otherwise I will leave them natural. Stains can definitely help protect cedar and also retain their color longer, but paints are not advised since they trap moisture inside the wood (non-porous) and can flake easily meaning they are relatively high maintenance (take a look a the before photos in the comment above to see how the old painted shingles looked).
Thanks! Yeah they look beautiful and last a really long time! Such a nice material to work with too, very satisfying. The old shingles I pulled off were 120 years old. 😳 These definitely won't last that long since we don't have the old-growth heartwood they did back then, but I do hope this job will outlast me at least.
