as a chronic insomniac...i agree it's so easy to overpower melatonin. i recommend trying it with valerian root night time tea. but importantly the key for me is wind down time and controlling your sleep atomsphere. ambient sleep music #altus at low volumes can help distract the mind and better ease into sleep 💜

Meditate not medicate. Start that. Will probably fix your sleep patterns after one month.
Or just smoke weed. That fixes everything.
