Just watched Eastern Promises (2007) directed by David Cronenberg. His 12th movie and the second one in his crime/drama phase. It’s a Russian mob drama starring Viggo Mortensen. It’s interesting to see it chronologically with the rest of his work. There’s definitely a parallel to be made with the story of an History of violence: some things are not as they seem. All the murder scenes and even the baby in the beginning of the movie: all Cronenberg’s special effects skills. Vincent Cassel is excellent as the boss’s son. He has some funny lines like this one: “This man was like brother to me. Now he’s like ice cream” 😂 I really like this movie. Watched it a few times before. 8.8/10 #nodereviews
Cassel is a legendary actor. He plays the weak son perfectly. I haven’t seen a bad performance of his yet. His character also has a slightly gay vibe now that I think of it 😂
Yep. That’s the one!
I like how the fight is not like in regular action movies where the hero wins easily without a scratch. This was a dirty fight. He barely makes it out alive
Excellent movies still. Except for the 3 existential ones. Specially that one with the car crashes 😂 ExistenZ is great. (Haven’t seen the ones after except Crimes of the future though) Mesrine in 2008 and Black Swan (2010) are the last one of his I saw. I think he was in a few westworld episodes. I’m looking up his stuff there’s quite a few after that.
Cronenberg is really good at that, the discomfort. That car crash movie. Terrible 😂
Mesrine was really good
That’s another way of saying it
Indeed. Good movies > feel good movies Sometimes they’re the same. Not often
😂
He’s another great one. There’s quite a few of his I haven’t seen. Mother! was incredible. Also very wtf is going on here. Constantly. Very stressful.
Not sure I’ve seen that one. Requiem was the first one I saw. I remember feeling bad for the mom. And for Connelly. So intense. What a great movie
So intense man. Genuinely felt bad for the women (the mom and Connelly). Crackheads everywhere is crazy
Epic movie. So many one liners in there. “I died when I was fifteen. Now I live in the zone”
I’ll download and tag them on to the festival 😂 4 left of Cronenberg, then Claire Denis movies, followed by the Cronenberg children movies 😂
Yes
I remember the main theme. Disturbing indeed. Especially when tied in to that movie
The whale was something. Disturbing too but for different reasons. Very odd. A main character that I didn’t like but I empathized with him still
Just read about this briefly. Didn’t know about this. Very interesting topic indeed
Definitely
Hides all of them? Are we sure we’re talking about the same movie 🤭😂😂🫂
