potentially stupid nostr question: when a nostr user initially logs into an app with just their nsec key (no nip-05), how does the app know the initial relay to fetch the profile info and relay list from? Are most apps just querying lots of known relays and hoping for a match?

yeah I would bet there's just built-in ones in the code to check first.
in the snort source, it looks like it grabs online ones from nostr.watch and randomly picks a few to looks at. https://git.v0l.io/Kieran/snort/src/branch/main/packages/app/src/Login/Functions.ts#L66

Yup, most clients fetch from a list of default relays

I think we were talking about something like nprofile for nsecs at one point? nostr:npub180cvv07tjdrrgpa0j7j7tmnyl2yr6yr7l8j4s3evf6u64th6gkwsyjh6w6
