I don't like all the depressing conversations going around right now about nostr's future. Yes, we should market, and we have to do better, but this is a ten year project, don't get too worked up about it failing already.

It’s not a nostr problem, it’s a bitcoin problem. eth adjacent social exists. But identifying as a user of fiat is silly, and adopting that culturally for bitcoin is the only way forward for bitcoin. #YouAreNotABitcoin

💯
Ironically, it's probably my fault for striking the negative note 😂 nostr:nevent1qqsg7tyjpsqhvv34syha2s2zc5e0n0nryzwfhfnthxllquwxls6yqzcpzpmhxue69uhkummnw3ezuamfdejsf0zsmx

wasn’t your fault, i started talking about tiktok clients because of fiatjaf’s response to you. 🤷♀️🤷♀️

for reals. it hasn't even been a year since most people have started building things on nostr. i think the progress that's been made is amazing.
Honestly!

The community has accomplished so much in such a short period of time. I’m not sure why people can’t see that at this point. I guess it’s natural to compare oneself to the outside to gauge success, but I don’t think it paints an accurate picture of what nostr has become. Slow, deliberate, and thoughtful growth goes against the western idea of storm the gates, conquer, control and monopolize, but maybe this is the model nostr needs to follow.

This is why I continue to cheerlead, excoriate, and throw sats at people. I’m on the outside of the dev work, but competent to have an opinion. The tech is good, the devs are talented, the people are uncommonly good. I’ve believed in slow steady growth for a long time and continue to. https://blog.thesamecat.io/exponential-growth-is-cancer/
Well said my friend. An old model, for a new world. A network built upon a group of heterogenous “bands” coming together to work towards a common goal. Where everyone is sheltered beneath the tree of freedom.

It's ok. 🫂 time passes slower as you approach the speed of light.

I have not seen any depressing conversations 🤷♂️ Where? All I saw was bluesky growing, nostr not as fast. And people talking about marketing. So far, from what I've heard, most people are pleasantly surprised with Nostr, so it seems it's just a matter of getting the word out. Marketing can help. Marketing doesn't mean not building. You can build and market at the same time.

Comparisons to bluesky are so shortsighted! When Meta/X announce their next new innovation bluesky will be left in the dust. It is incredibly narrow and has no depth. Nostr is a replacement and an advancement all in one. Like you said it is just going to take time to build - build the tech, build the community, and build confidence.

Maybe freedom tech will always be behind because most people don’t care about being free and just want to be a part of the largest group.
Reposition it from freedom tech to ultimate network effects tech. Side of freedom anyone? 🍽️
arkinox @arkinox - 1y
I hear we have to do better so we can rival billion dollar social media giants and we also have to do it basically for free 😆 get right on that 🫡
Why not both? Is that not what the original incarnation of the internet was?
🤷♂️ I didn’t use internet for freedom. I used it because it was weird. But that’s just me.
Derek Ross @Derek Ross - 1y
This is most likely the correct answer. We're humans. Humans have an inherent need to be social. Most gravitate to where the largest groups of other humans are located.
😂 and definitely the reason I choose nostr!
