Fortunately, my wife is basic on tech and gets upgraded through my old stuff. Although now my equipment smells like cigar smoke, so this tradition may die 😬 And I'm a savage running older hardware as I age. Would like to build a sick AI worthy rig though.

I haven't shopped in literal years. I've been rocking the same thinkpad with Fedora for like 4 or 5 years. And it works fine other than shit battery life (which was always the case). But local AI is yeet on it. Although not as bad as I expected, and there are smaller local models now that are even quicker. But any serious workflow on it just isn't going to work. It was okay for academic research.
He's going to see if he can repair the Thinkpad and use that as his "lightweight" laptop, and then buy himself a real monster.
