so, the expected rain came alright... it's been raining all night, heavily, and still into the morning today
i can actually see looking at the ocean the fresh water is making a distinct different line of different looking water in the ocean

if you zoom in close to that picture you can see what looks like a circular area of paler, more reflective sea water, most likely that is caused by the run-off from the rain
why i wanted to show this is because you can see straight away salient property of fresh water versus salty water... it has a different refractive index, its surface is more reflective... i think this is because it's colder
the change in the weather patterns here on #madeira are a signal of something changing in the water currents of the atlantic ocean, and related to changing amounts of energy coming from the sun
ultraviolet light causes increased ice melt in the polar regions, and the fresh water is colder than the salty water, the salty water has more thermal capacity because of the dissolved salts in it
when the rate of melt exceeds a certain threshold, it will disrupt the usual flow of warm water from the gulf of mexico out to the west coast of europe, which will cause europe to get a lot colder and wetter in winter time
it's already making this place in the middle of the sea not far from africa colder, but also in the daytime, currently, something is disrupting the usual seasonal days long drizzle, and instead making more short, part day periods of heavier rain and then dry skies
at least, this was the pattern for much of the last two weeks here... if it continues within 3 hours the rain will cease
anyway, just showing the image of how the sea water looks different
i'd noticed these flatter, shinier tracks floating through the sea before and previously assumed that they were from boats, but i now think they are probably from water flows coming out of the little creeks that run out into the sea, and normally just form small channels of colder, less salty water, but with such a heavy rain it's just blowing out
