We heat our home mostly with a wood and coal stove. Most of the winter we only burn wood to get the fire started and then burn coal because it is hotter and does a better job of heating the whole house, especially when it is below 0 F outside. In the spring we sometimes use just wood, so it doesn't get too warm in the house. Living in Wyoming I can get coal cheap, <$100/ton. A fire destroyed our house in 2015 and killed a bunch of huge cottonwoods. We are still burning the wood from them and will be able to continue for at least a few more years.
That's great. Our Cubic Mini can keep us ok down to about 15°f in the rv. Works great for a chilly morning until the sun hit the camper. A wood boiler was next on our home improvement wish list if we hadn't sold our homestead.
I have no experience with residential coal heat.
