If you saturate the labor market with cheap engineers, you will find the engineering profession less desirable than working the fryer at McDonalds. The same happened to the construction industry, now we have a glut of overpriced and low quality real estate. This is what Elon and Vivek want most for their companies (and by extension for all tech) because developing new products costs time and money and they are asking for something for free on the backs of the middle class. #H1B
I understand engineering fully. Firstly, the 1:1000000 engineer is not bound by borders, so this public discussion about "we want all of them" is bullshit. They will be where they want to be, and where they are most needed. Secondly, engineering is about opportunity. The more opportunities an engineer has, the more experience they have; this combined with love and drive, the better they become. Thirdly, the people driving this discussion are armchair economists and business majors. They have no fucking clue what the ground game looks like when it comes to developing engineers. Elon is no exception to this rule. He is acclaimed to be the greatest engineer of all time, but in reality he is more a well connected, smart and highly technical financier. I am very impressed by Elon, but I also know he is not someone you want to be on the receiving end of a business relationship with.
OK. You're right. Let's make everyone's wages lower, because that will improve corporations' profitability and why wouldn't we want big corporations to be bigger and more profitable? In fact, we should only allow corporations to hire non-citizens and pay them a maximum wage of 50% what an American would command, and if they quit or get fired then back to their third-world mud hut! Particularly we should focus on replacing the professional class because all those greedy white doctors and engineers shouldn't be paid for their talent and hard work. No! We should use the lure of living in America for a slave class and unbounded migration so there is no incentive for a native born American to gain experience to invent, create and thrive. I now see the wisdom in your advice, I'm sorry for suggesting otherwise
If money wasn't the topic of discussion, nobody would want to migrate to the US. You are moving the goalpost and declaring victory
